Client Spotlight: Custom Buttons for Artist Jackie Kon aka Sparklebombb

February 15, 2017 By justbuttons

Here at Just Buttons, we get orders from all sorts of creative folks.  Recently, we received an order from Jackie Kon, a California-based illustrator. The acetate “Egg” custom buttons were an especially big hit here at the shop. We loved her artwork so much, we just had to know more!

Tell us a little bit about yourself! Who you are, what you do, hobbies, etc.

I am a Los Angeles based Illustrator, and I love to create fun and happy illustrations/products for everyone to enjoy!

Sparklebombb AKA Jackie Kon

On the side, I love cooking! You can see my creations (both illustrative and culinary) on my Instagram: sparklebombb. I love nothing better than to watch cartoons while I work or cook! You can usually find me watching my iPad while I’m making food for the week ? I also love to collect stickers! I have a very big sticker collection and I hoard all of them in an insane drawer in my studio. I have always loved stickers ever since I was in kindergarten and I remember I would keep a special sticker album to put all my collections in. It was my most precious treasure at that age. I actually still have my sticker booklets till this day…(I’m 26 now hahah)

I also have a passion for makeup! I love transforming my face to look different every day if I wanted to. I don’t always treat makeup as a way to just look “natural and beautiful” I treat makeup like I’m painting and sculpting my face. I am creating something new and exciting when I experiment with colors and effects. I will leave the house in multicolored eyeshadows and lip colors. I have done freelance makeup as well for fun on the side and have met some really wonderful people that way.
Everything that I chose to participate in my life I put my all in. I don’t believe in half efforts or wasting time, so if you are going to do something, then REALLY commit and do it, therefore you will always love everything that you do!

What got you interested in art? Do you have any formal training or are you self-taught? What goes into the production of your work?

I have been doing art since I was very little, I was always interested in drawing and creating things.

As a little kid I would draw, sculpt, and craft all the time. All my teachers in elementary school usually knew me as the “artist” in the class. My parents saw my love for it and decided to enroll me in private art classes. I have always thought that art was going to just be a “side thing” or even just a “hobby” but in my junior year of high school, I decided to take “AP Art” and really loved the class. I loved the process of creating work, critiquing, expressing new ideas, and exploring different mediums. I remember thinking at the time that this was a big deal to make a completely different choice in schools than my high school peers. Everyone I knew were applying to UC schools and in the end I decided to look into Art Center College of Design. I figured that If I was going to be serious about my art career that I should look into the top schools to get that education from, I ended up attending Art Center for 5 years.

Production of my work varies and depends on what I’m working on. In recent years I am starting to go into “surface design” which is applying my artwork on to anything that has a surface, (e.i curtains, buttons, fabrics, walls, bags, purses, jewelry etc). But in general I start with sketching an idea out on my sketchbook and I revise it until I’m satisfied (I usually have a heavy hand so I have multiple drawings of the same thing over and over in my sketchbooks, I don’t like to draw with a sketchy “hairy” quality…hard lines! yay!) then I scan my illustration into my computer and render to completion on Illustrator or Photoshop.

What inspires your work? Is it specific subject matter, other artists?

I take a lot of inspiration from things I love, such as Japanese culture, history, patterns, yummy snacks, toys, cartoons, and of course anything “kawaii” (cute). It is very important to me to create artwork that “speaks” to people on a happy or funny level. I love making people laugh and I’m generally a goofball in my group of friends. I am very committed to a joke when I get into one and will probably do outrageous things to not break character. All jokes are of course harmless and silly. I feel like that is a sense of freedom to be who you are and to not be afraid of people judging you. I want to create art that makes people feel positive, happy, love, and unafraid to be themselves. My passion lies with how people feel when they see my work. I want my artwork to help people on their path to happiness and self-expression~!

How did you find Just Buttons? How do you plan on using your order/will they be available for sale somewhere?

I found just buttons by asking my very good and close friend, google. He always knows what’s in, hot, and fresh! And yes, of course, my lovely buttons will be available for purchase on my Etsy shop! And they will be with me when I attend two conventions in September, Sabakon and Touhoucon! I will be selling other goodies on that day that aren’t posted on my etsy store! So please come and visit me! Let’s be friends (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

You can find Jackie on Facebook, Etsy, Instagram, Twitter, and Tumblr for updates about new and fun products and also “little peeks into my crazy clutter of a brain”!
